The Wohngeld Reform – What Has Changed?

Wohngeld has been reformed several times in recent years. The most important change was Wohngeld-Plus on January 1, 2023 – the largest Wohngeld reform in decades. There are also adjustments for 2025 and 2026. Here you can learn what has changed and what that means for you in Bochum.

Wohngeld Reforms at a Glance

📅 2023: Wohngeld-Plus

Wohngeld-Plus came into force on January 1, 2023. The most important changes: Significant increase in Wohngeld by an average of 190 EUR per month, introduction of a permanent heating cost component (Klimakomponente), introduction of a dynamic adjustment clause – Wohngeld will automatically adjust to rent and income developments every two years, expansion of the eligible group – an estimated 2 million additional households are now entitled.

📅 2025: First Dynamic Adjustment

The first automatic adjustment under the dynamic adjustment clause took place on January 1, 2025. Wohngeld was increased by about 12 to 15 percent to compensate for the inflation and rent increases since 2023. The maximum rent amounts and income limits were raised accordingly.

📅 2026: Further Adjustments

Further moderate adjustments are planned for 2026. The dynamic adjustment ensures that Wohngeld remains effective even with rising living costs. The exact adjustment rates are announced at each year's end.

🌡️ The Klimakomponente – Heating Cost Supplement

A central component of Wohngeld-Plus is the Klimakomponente. It takes into account the increased heating costs as a flat rate and is granted permanently. The Klimakomponente is added as a supplement to the actual Wohngeld and depends on household size. For a one-person household it amounts to about 17 to 22 EUR, correspondingly more for larger households.

Female pensioner, 900 EUR pension, 380 EUR rent Approx. 90 – 130 EUR Approx. 210 – 280 EUR

What Does the Reform Mean for Bochum?

Particularly many households in Bochum benefit from Wohngeld-Plus. Due to the increase in income limits and the introduction of the Klimakomponente, many Bochum residents are now entitled to Wohngeld for the first time or receive a significantly higher amount. Especially in a city with a medium rent level like Bochum (Mietstufe III), the reform makes a noticeable difference.

The Future of Wohngeld

Thanks to the dynamic adjustment clause, Wohngeld will now be automatically adjusted every two years. This means more planning security for Wohngeld recipients and prevents Wohngeld from being eroded by inflation. The next regular adjustment is scheduled for January 1, 2027.
