Wohngeld is generally granted for a period of twelve months (approval period). After that, you must apply for renewal if you wish to continue receiving Wohngeld. Here's what you need to know.
⏰ When Do I Need to Apply for Renewal?
The renewal application should be submitted in good time before the end of the approval period – ideally two to three months in advance. The Wohngeldstelle Bochum usually sends a reminder letter, but you should not rely on this alone. Important: If the renewal application is submitted only after the approval period has expired, Wohngeld will only be paid from the month of the new application. You risk a payment gap.
What Changes with Renewal?
The renewal process is essentially the same as a new application. You must provide proof of your current income and rent again. If your circumstances have changed – e.g., higher or lower income, birth of a child, a household member moving out – this will affect the amount of Wohngeld.
Change Notification – What Must I Report?
During the ongoing approval period, you must immediately report certain changes to the Wohngeldstelle. These include: Increase in income of more than 15 percent, change in household size (family members moving in or out), increase in rent, loss of maintenance claims. Failure to report changes may result in Wohngeld being reclaimed.
